One of my favourite booktubers Larissa of Larryreads often says post that video, post that reel. It could go places you never imagined and opened doors you’ve only ever dreamed of walking through. It reminds me of what my professor said in my Creative Writing class when we discussed the fact that there are no new stories. She said yes, there aren’t new stories but the story has not been told by you. Each of us has a unique voice and experiences that colour our creative works. They bring a unique perspective that no one else in the world has, only you. Your ‘silly’ little poem might touch a stranger miles away from you.

I just completed Chanel Miller’s novel Know my Name. Her words resonated with me from across the ocean. I don’t know her, I’ve never met her and I probably never will but her story, her voice, her passion touched me. I found myself laughing with her, crying with her and applauding her. That is the power of our creative voice. This is why we keep on creating. Because if even just one person can relate to us, can understand us, it is enough.

I once stumbled on a thread on Twitter (when it was still called that) where people were sharing movies or tv shows and series that kept them alive. I was incredibly moved by the story of a man who said he was going to commit suicide in two days. He had a plan and an execution date. His family was going away. It was all ready then he was watching tv and realised his favourite show was coming back for a second season in 2 weeks. So he promised himself to hold on till the show came out. He wanted to at least see the second season. By the time the show came back on and all the episodes aired, he had somehow given up on going through with the plan. That show saved his life. That is the power of a creative voice. He mentioned the show never won any awards, it wasn’t critically acclaimed or important to many people but it had saved him. It made me think of all the many creators on YouTube or Instagram or TikTok that turned on their camera and inadvertently saved a life.

When life was unbearable and I could not go on. After praying and crying to my God, I turn to Larissa’s videos so I can feel less alone. Listening to her make jokes about books, smiling and talking about the difficult days anchored me when it truly hurt. Her videos and that of so many other creators that I mentioned in my Wrap Up saved my life just like that show saved the man’s life.

Sometimes creating is a lifeline for us too. It is the way we make sense of the world around us. It helps us carry on. Yet, these other stories are important too. The stories of the impact of our works - our words, our stories, our voice, our expressions, our light - It all matters. It matters more than we might ever realise or understand.

As a writer who currently cannot write, I am deeply grateful for my colleagues who can. Thank you for holding my hand without ever seeing me. This is why we create, it’s why you should never give up when imposter syndrome hits and you feel unworthy. It matters, you matter. Thank you.

Keep on reflecting, keep on creating, keep on being.

Love,
